FAQs

  • This is a great question! Clothing with texture and patterns works very well with the wet plate process. Solid colors are also okay, but you should focus on mid-tone colors and try to avoid all black or all white clothing. However, if you choose to wear black and/or white colors, the clothing should have some type of pattern and/or texture for the best results. Also bear in mind, the colors red, orange and yellow will tend to darken to almost black in this process. Lastly, for couples who are coming for portraits together, we strongly recommend wearing clothing with contrasting colors to one another.

  • The short answer is, yes, with caveats. We often hear, “I wouldn’t look like myself if I didn’t have my glasses on!” We understand there are people for which glasses are a part of who they are. However, making tintype images requires UV light, and lots of it! Therefore, if your lenses have a UV block (as most do) they will darken to varying extents depending on the level of UV block on the lens. If your lenses are transitional to sunglasses in sunlight, they will also turn black in your tintype. We use strobe lighting in our studio, which adds to the challenges when subjects are wearing glasses.

If you cannot forego wearing your glasses, a great solution is to bring an older pair with the lenses popped out. This allows you to keep your signature look while avoiding the issues with UV light. Your local eyewear provider can show you how to safely remove the lenses, and this is best done with an older or spare pair. If this isn’t an option for you, we’ll do our best to work with your glasses, with your understanding of the potential outcomes beyond our control.
